Mindfulness–Based Stress Reduction Program Results

The Medical Symptom Check List (MSCL) has been used as a pre and post measure since the program began in June, 1993. Participants check-off symptoms they have experienced in the last two months covering a multitude of physical and emotional complaints. Results from over 150 programs show there has been a 40% average decrease in complaints after completing the eight week medical program.

Follow-up Survey, three months to two years:

These are the results from 162 participants interviewed with 53% response, completed in 1995 at El Camino Hospital.

Evaluation Results from Physicians:

Thirty-three physicians filled out evaluations in 1994 and 1995 rating the progress of their patients who participated in the Stress Reduction Clinic. Reasons for attending ranged from anxiety and panic disorders, back pain, cancer, cervical neuralgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, depression, a variety of G.I. disorders, fibromyalgia, heart disease, hypertension, migraines and tension headaches, mitral prolapse, neck pain, post traumatic stress disorder, and general life stress related to work and home life.

Conclusion:

The Stress Reduction Clinic has helped patients improve their ability to live with illness, chronic pain, and stress. The program continues to help participants deal more effectively with stress and maintain an improved sense of well being.
